Rock Chalk Jayhawk: Xavier Henry to Kansas

In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Bill Self has landed the biggest fish left in the sea. After finding out Xavier Henry will be attending Kansas University next season, Flagrant Fouls breaks down his impact on the Jayhawks 2010 campaign.

After being convinced by my sources that Xavier would not end up at Kansas, it seems I have an apology to make to Kansas fans across the nation. Although it was a long and difficult process, Xavier’s decision to join the Jayhawks immediately vaults them to the preseason favorites to cut down the nets during the first week of April, 2010. With Sherron Collins deciding that he will return to play point guard, the Jayhawks figure to have the best backcourt in America next season. Sherron Collins is as clutch a shooter as there is in college basketball and is very steady with the ball. Add Xavier’s ability to score the ball in a multitude of fashions and the Jayhawks new 1-2 punch may end up being the most prolific scoring duo in Kansas history.

Xavier is equipped with a big time NBA body, which has drawn comparisons to that of LeBron James at an early age. His ability to slash and finish is directly attributed to the power and speed he is blessed with. But what makes Xavier Henry the best off guard in high school basketball is his versatility. On top of having the strength to finish at the basket, Xavier can also really shoot the rock. He is so multi dimensional that I believe Henry will have an easier time transitioning to the college game than any other prospect in America. He’s got a great attitude, is a great kid, and the Jayhawk nation will be proud to welcome him to their elite fraternity.

The backcourt is not the only part of Bill Self’s team that will benefit from having Xavier. Kansas also has one of the best big men in America, Cole Aldrich. Having Henry and Collins on the perimeter will make it almost impossible to double the post. Playing Cole straight up is a matchup nightmare for almost any team. Cole averaged 15 and 11 last year and his numbers figure to skyrocket this year, even with the plethora of offensive weapons Kansas will possess. Much like Hansborogh benefited in Chapel Hill from having a backcourt that you can’t play off, Aldrich figures to benefit from some of those same situations.

It’s going to be pick your poison in Kansas this season with the addition of Xavier Henry to a team that already boasts two of the nations top returning players. If they Xavier can ride the veteran leadership already in place, than sky’s the limit for the 2009-2010 Kansas Jayhawks.

We will be a very deep and athletic team. The missing piece this past year was a consistent 3rd option. Self outdid himself so much in recruiting Xavier and CJ so much that the younger Henry may not only fulfill that void; he may overtake Cole from day one as the 2nd option on offense!
