2011 Sharp Shooter Trevor Cooney Discusses his Future and his Time at LBJ

Since I arrived in Akron Sunday, I’ve had the opportunity to watch quite a few prospects. None have been more impressive than 6′4 sniper, Trevor Cooney. I’ve been so impressed that I had to track down the 2011 recruit to get a few words. Trevor was really a first class individual. He’s articulate, smart, and demonstrates an extremely high basketball IQ.
Q: I wrote an article yesterday about the 5 most impressive guys so far at the LeBron James Skills Academy, and you were #2 on the list. I’ve been very impressed with your game thus far. Your a 2011 recruit. What’s given you the confidence to come out and preform at such a high level against older competition?
A: Well it started a while ago, just playing with these guys. You see these guys all over the circuit , so just knowing you can play with these guys and coming out and working hard.
Q: So everyone knows the type of shooter you are, that’s pretty common knowledge amongst the scouts and media. What’s impressed me so far has been your decision making, and ability to get to the tin. Do you see yourself as a point guard or two guard at the next level?
A: I’m a combo guard. I’m working on ball handling now so that when I go to college, if they need me to play point guard I can play point guard. If they want me to play shooting guard, I can play shooting guard too. So I’m just trying to balance everything out.
Q: So we’re here at the LeBron James Skills Academy and I know LeBron talked with you guys and briefly worked with you guys. What’s it been like having that once in a lifetime opportunity and working with such a great staff?
A: I mean the staff is unbelievable here, and adding LeBron to it…(shaking his head at a loss for words)…I mean the stuff you learn is just the little stuff about basketball and they are some of the best. I’m coming away with a lot of stuff and a lot of new drills to take back with me.
Q: Have you thought about where you might attend college? Have you got anybody on your list?
A: I like Syracuse, Nova, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland…I mean those are my top schools right there.
Q: So I know you said Syracuse first, and I guess watching you here has given me some flashbacks. I remember watching Gerry McNamara growing into his own and becoming a great player. How would you say your game compares to his?
A: Well I wish my game compared to his. I’m not up to his level yet, but I hope to get there one day. I guess shooting ability, hopefully I want to get to where he was. But I want to be more athletic than he was, and also I’m a little bigger, and I want to use that to my advantage.
Q: Keep shooting those jumpers and working on your game and you’ll be just fine Trevor. Congrats on having such a great camp and good luck at the King City Classic.

some very interesting points… but i think your research and bias leaves a lot to be desired… then of course, that’s just my opinion…
have a great day… definitely a thought-provoking post!
Andy your an idiot. You probably think Allen Iverson is a great practice player.
Get sum
We don’t need another slow, white, combo guard. I know, I know big east tourney and 6 threes. he also shot 35 percent from 3 and was not a real pg
Noone could ever compare to Gerry, but I’d love to see him try. I love that CJ is in his ear, and I’m glad you think he looks completely healthy cause i was nervous.
Cooney, Ross, and LeBryant Nash would be so fucking amazing. I need to pinch myself and realize we don’t have that kind of money
Great meeting you today Nolan. Appreciate the help evaluating the kids I wasn’t familiar with. Your site is gorgeous and your interviews are well put together. You need to work on your free throw shooting. 0-5 in front of 500 people isn’t going to get it done.
sorry to break it to you guys, but this kid is coming to Villanova. We have has so many guards go pro recently it would make a lot more sense to his future. Plus Jay Wright is the best recruiter in the world, so get to the back of bus
Get this guy decked in Orange. We are ready for the next Gmac. Looking forward to seeing Cooney light up the Dome.
This kid is dreaming.
He will never be anything close to McNamara. But I would love to see him play behind Boheim, so Jim could tell him himself.
