Jonny Flynn: NBA Rookie of the Month

Posted on 22. Jul, 2009 by Nolan in NBA, Summer League

The rise of Jonny Flynn continued its quick ascent this week, as the Minnesota Timberwolves rookie won the first NBA Rookie of the Month award in ‘09-10. The Niagra Falls native and former Syracuse point guard has been on a heck of a run the past few months. Since thrilling the world at Madison Square Gardens and winning “the greatest game in Big East history”, Jonny Flynn has seen his stock go from late first round pick to NBA Lottery, and now Rookie of the Month. According to Jonny, “It means a lot of people took a liking to my game…I just don’t want to be complacent. I want to keep getting better and working on my game.”

There will be plenty of opportunity for Jonny to bring home more awards. The Timberwolves are very thin at point guard this season, having just traded Sebastian Telfair and not knowing what’s going to happen with Ricky Rubio. This likely guarentees Jonny will be the opening day starting point guard. If the summer league was any indication, Jonny should be more than capable of running the team, electrifying the crowd, and putting up big numbers. He’s also accustomed to playing huge minutes and being thrown directly to the fire. While at Syracuse Jonny started immediately his freshman season and logged a staggering 38 minutes a game. The kid has heart, moxxy, and the desire to improve daily. When you put those traits with his ability to penetrate and push the tempo, you quickly realize how he shot up so many draft boards during the draft process.

The fans in Minnesota have a lot of reasons to be excited right now. After drafting two point guards back to back in the draft, the TWolves can be assured they’ve got at least one superstar in the making.
