The second high school workout just ended here at the LeBron James Skills Academy and it’s hard not to notice Life Center Academy shooting guard Dion Waiters. With a chiseled body and attacking style, he truly stands out amongst the other guards in the gym. Ranked as the #5 shooting guard in the class of 2010, Dion will be taking his game to Syracuse next fall. I got the chance to sit down with Dion and discuss his experience at LeBron’s camp, as well as his future with the Orange.
Q: So you transferred from South Kent to Life Center Academy. What has that transition been like?
A: It’s been real good. As far as books wise and on and off the court, everything has been real good.
Q: You committed to Syracuse in just your sophomore year. Are you looking forward to getting up there and playing in the Dome?
A: I can’t wait. The Dome has 25,000 fans every night and I can’t wait to show them what I can do.
Q: Your here with fellow Syracuse commit, C.J.Fair. Have you guys talked about what it’s going to be like playing together?
A: It’s going to be crazy. He’s a great player and a good guy. It’s just going to be crazy.
Q: You had a high ankle sprain and missed your entire junior season. How are you feeling health wise?
A: Well the left one is much better, but than I sprained the right one. They’re getting together though and healing good. I’m feeling pretty good.
Q: You got a body built like a brick wall. How do you think that’s going to help you in the Big East?
A: Well, I mean it’s the Big East! It’s real physical so I think it’s going to help me a lot. I work real hard and work out everyday. It’s physical in the Big East but I think I’ll be ready.
Q: Andy Rautins is graduating next season and the starting job should be up for grabs. Are you going in with the intention of starting?
A: Ya. I’m going in with the hope of starting. I’m working hard and hope that I will be the starter.
Q: I gotta ask, did you get a chance to watch the 6OT game during the Big East Tournament?
A: I was going crazy. I couldn’t believe it. I was just going crazy (laughing).
Q: Here we are at the LeBron James Skills Academy. What has the experience of working out with the King been like?
A: Well, I was here last year but anytime you get a chance to be around a player like that (shaking his head in aw) it can only be good. He’s so big, so good, so it’s been real good.
Q: Thanks for your time Dion. Keep those ankles healthy and have a terrific senior year.
