Kyrie Irving to Duke: #1 Point Guard Is Off The Board

Posted on 22. Oct, 2009 by Nolan Shulman in High School

No longer do the Blue Devils have to wonder who will handle the point guard duties in Cameron Indoor. The #1 point guard in high school basketball, Kyrie Irving, is going to Duke. The Blue Devils have been lacking a true point guard for the last few years. That’s not an indictment on Jon Sheyer, he’s done a very admirable job playing out of position. But Kyrie is a kid who has the total package. A star at St.Patrick in New Jersey, he’s got the ability to penetrate, plays extremely unselfish, displays a more than adequate stroke, and has the ability to lead by example. This is the big signing everyone has been waiting on. The #1 point guard in the class of 2010 is officially off the board.

Kyrie chose Duke over Kentucky and Texas A&M. For Calipari, this is the first big name prospect he’s chased and missed since joining Kentucky. After nabbing John Wall and Demarcus Cousins last summer, I wouldn’t feel too bad for Coach Cal. Besides, he’s still in the mix with almost every other big named guard left on the market. I’m sure he’ll get his. For Coach Turgeon, it’s tough. He had a chance to pick up a program changing recruit and came up just short.

Today is Duke’s day. They fill a huge need and reel in a huge fish on the same day. They haven’t had a talent like this running the show since Jason Williams left town. With Andre Dawkins getting a year of experience under his belt, Duke’s backcourt has a bright, bright future. Coach K is quietly building for another Championship run down in Durham. Today was a huge piece of the puzzle.

BIG BLUE NATION is everywhere. Awful choice. You could have been the next Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall…..guarenteed lottery. Now the only guarentee you have is that your coach likes to hug.

Kyrie. What were you thinking? You could have taken over for Wall down at Kentucky and been part of Big Blue Nation.
