COP: Cory Joseph Takes Head to Head Matchup with Austin Rivers

Cory Joseph made sure there wouldn’t be any hangover from Findlay’s loss to Northland Thursday night. With Austin Rivers looming, Cory got his guys re-focused and ready to battle. In what was billed as a heavyweight showdown between two of the premiere point guards in America, the two superstars didn’t dissapoint.
From the opening tip Rivers and Joseph gave the fans what they came for. The two dazzled the crowd, trading baskets; finishing with ten points a piece in the first quarter. Rivers showed off his unbelievable scoring ability throughout the first half, making three’s off the dribble, off the curl, and by using pump fakes to clear space. When Cory and Nick Johnson didn’t bite on the fake, Austin showed off his superior ability to go one on one, taking it to the tin and getting in the paint anytime he wanted. Cory was no slouch offensively either. He made 5 of his 6 three’s in the half, scoring 21 points. He used his tremendous end to end quickness to push the tempo and get the Pilots out running. That’s something they struggled with in the first half in Columbus. After struggling to score in the half court vs. Northland, Joseph made sure to get the Pilots out running early and often.
The second half was much more defensive than the first. Joseph absolutely put the clamps on Rivers, holding him to 3-10 shooting and 0-5 from downtown. He frustrated Austin, denying him the ball and not allowing him to get anything easy. With Rivers out of his element, Winter Park was no match for the high octane offense of the Pilots. Findlay Prep rebounded from their first loss in 45 outings, winning the contest 86-75. Findlay Prep will play Dunbar Monday at 3:30 pm, while Winter Park will square off with Dai-Jon Parker, Julian Royal and the Milton Eagles. We’ll be there to give you the report.
