Ed Davis stepped up tonight and played with an energy and passion that I had not yet seen. In past contests it appeared that Davis was going through the motions. Tonight Davis fed off the crowd’s energy and powered the Tar Heels to a marquee win. Ed established position deep on the block in order to set himself up for easy shots and layups. He scored 22 points with only 10 shot attempts. Tonight Davis showed signs of being a legitimate post scorer rather than a proficient shot maker. Davis still needs to be reminded to demand the ball, especially when he is riding the hot hand. It’s admirable to see the trust Davis puts in his teammates but sometimes he has to take matter in his own hands. Consistent scoring nights like this will ensure Ed is a top five selection on draft day.

With the core of Carolina’s team having left for the NBA this was Davis’ first opportunity to shine in a starting role. Big Ed didn’t disappoint showing that the cupboard is far from bare in Chapel Hill. Ed isn’t ready to make people forget Tyler Hansborough but he is going to be a thoroughbred down low for the Tar Heels. Davis displayed great vision from the high post and his passing skills were excellent, finding open teammates when the double teams approached him. Davis’ shot selection was impressive as he never forced a shot nor did he take anything out of his comfort range. Davis could have been more physical on the block so that he could establish better position before the ball gets to him rather than having to establish it once he receives it. Defensively, any shot that missed he seemed to have a beat on and he is quite smart when it came to blocking shots. Most shot blockers can’t help themselves by trying to block anything and everything but Davis seems mature beyond his years by displaying the where with all to know what he can block, and which shots he simply has to alter. Carolina is a team that is known for pushing the tempo and Davis seemed a little slow footed running the floor. I will be watching that more closely in future games and will shock it up for now to him being a little out of game shape, considering it was the opener.
