Kyrie Irving: Continues to exhibit the speed and ball control that will allow for him to create open shots for his teammates. The heady guard's ability…

Kyrie Irving: Continues to exhibit the speed and ball control that will allow for him to create open shots for his teammates. The heady guard's ability to create off the dribble, and knock down open shots will definetly cause fits for the World Team's backcourt.

Kendall Marshall: Has been showing the leadership qualities that made him standout to coach Williams at UNC. Looking the most comfortable with the newly learned offensive scheme. While he's shown leadership and basketball IQ, Kendall has been a little inconsistent finishing at the rim.

Brandon Knight: Hands down has been the most aggressive and determined player on the US team. Clearly showing why he's considered by most the best guard in the country. Knight has been getting to the rim and fininshing like most have never seen him finish before. Powerful dunks from the baseline, runners as if he were from the streets of New York instead of Florida, and consistently hitting from 3 point range.

Will Barton: Has surprisingly been a positive spark to a team determined not to fall short to the world team. Barton has found a home in the lane the past two days during the scrimmages. Time after time he breaks down whatever defense is thrown at him to develop enough space to create off the dribble. His knifing attacks through the lane and his pull up 15 foot jumper has made him extremely difficult to guard this week.

Harrison Barnes: Continues to show why he is regarded as the top player in the class. Barnes has shown that his jump shot is to be as feared as his ability to to break defenders down basically any time he wishes. Harison continues to be a silent but very efficent key player that will sure to be a defensive issue for any World Team player.

Reggie Bullock: Has brought more of a defensive presence to the team and has been heavily involved on offensive put back opportunities. Will be one of the US players to bring intense aggressiveness on both sides of the ball, and most likely wil be a difficult matchup for any of the players on the World Select Team.

Terrance Jones: Could argubly be the most outstanding player during this weeks practices. Jones has been exhibiting his entire offensive arsenal, showing a consistent jump shot and also playing effectively in the post. Terrance's ability to basically do what he wants on the court has become very evident, and tends to beg the question; who will be willing and able to take responsibility of defending on the Internation squad.

Meyers Leonard: Is and continues to be the surprise athlete on the US Team. The only 7 footer on the team, Leonard brings the type of player that the US will need against the World Team. Meyers versatality has shocked and amazed those here who have little to no knowledge his abilities. The Fighting Illini recruit possesses a lot of skills that have made it possible for most European players to succed in the US; 3 point range, great foot work, and strong around the rim. He has been an unexpected, but a very welcome addition to the team since Tobias Harris's recent foot injury.

Jared Sullinger: Has simply continued the dominace displayed two weeks earlier at the McDonalds game. Displaying that he's more than just a post player. He has also shown that he can hit the 15 foot jumper along with displaying excellent patence in the post. He's even showed off his athleticism, finishing with rim rattling dunks. Surprisingly consistent with getting up and down the court, and being a factor in the transition game.

Patric Young: Simply a man amoung children when it comes to pure strength. Young is just dominate around the key, grabbing everything near or around the rim. On the defensive end Young has been a beast, blocking shots, and causing havoc in the paint. He will be the one guy the US will look to in handling the size of the World Team big men. Will he guard Enes Kanter?

Tobias Harris: Has been as uplifting as anybody on the team for someone who isn't participating in this weeks events (due to a recently broke foot at the McDonalds game two weeks ago). Displaying the smile of a kid who is just taking and enjoying the opportunity of being selected to the USA team.

At 7pm Saturday night, 10 of the best high school senior American born basketball players will face off against a 10 man World select team…

At 7pm Saturday night, 10 of the best high school senior American born basketball players will face off against a 10 man World select team comprised of the best 19 year old's around the globe. The event will take place at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon and will be played under international rules. The annual event provides many of these young standouts their first opportunity to represent their country. It's something they'll never forget. Flagrant Fouls will be on hand weekend long, reporting behind the scenes from practices, scrimmages, and the game.

MORNING SESSION

The morning session started slowly, as Team USA spent the first portion of practice getting acquainted with one another. The players stretched, got loose, and then got down to business; preparing for the World Select Team. From the start Will Barton, Harrison Barnes, and Brandon Knight showed that the selection committee made no error in putting together this year’s team. These three, along with Kyrie Irving, attacked practice as professionals intent on making sure that Team USA would not suffer the same fate as the 2009 American's. Barton displayed his usual keen sense of finding his way into the lane during the morning scrimmages, usually finishing with running floaters, or emphatic dunks. Knight & Irving did an excellent job running the team, getting everyone involved and also causing havoc on defense. Barnes did what Barnes always does. He brought his hard hat and lunch pale to work and displayed a consistent presence both offensively and defensively. All together Team USA had great introductory practice.

AFTERNOON SESSION

It didn't take long to realize we were in for a treat in the afternoon session. As soon as we saw players from both Oregon State and Portland State University roll into the gym, we knew we were about to see Team USA go live. As we assumed, these players were brought in to give the newly formed USA squad a team to scrimmage. There were four individual games played in twelve minute frames, and from the beginning the team comprised of D-1 players were out to show the young All-Americans that the afternoon runs would be no cake walk.

The young bucks quickly received a wakeup call, losing the first game. Terrance Jones came alive as a major contributor in game two and the Americans never looked back. Terrance made timely jump shots, and took his defender to the lane at will. Combine that with a massive defensive effort given by Brandon Knight & Jared Sullinger and Team USA became to much for their counterparts. Knight and Sully played very hard nosed defense, which provided opportunities for others such as Harrison Barnes to be more aggressive on the offensive end. Team USA took the last 3 games and ended the first day of practices on an extremely high note.

Tuesday, March 30 (10:10am)

Rumors in the gym are that Knight is Kentucky bound. Selby WILL announce at half tiime of the Jordan Brand game, and the common thought is that he'll end up at Kansas. Cory Joseph is the biggest mystery right now. He hasn't tipped his hat at all, though the majority of people I've talked to seem to feel that Texas is in excellent shape.

Tuesday, March 30 (9:55am)

Jereme Richmond has great bounce and a high motor. He's been the garbage man so far in scrimmage.

Ray Mac playing with great confidence. After showing his athleticism last night, Ray has demonstrated what he's known for; running a team. He plays the pic and roll well, gets in the lane, guards with purpose, and is a great communicator. He's got it all.

Tuesday, March 30 (9:39am)

After watching the East yesterday, I'm taking in the West practice today. Fab Melo has been really impressive so far. The way he shoots it at his size is absurd. The big man is in great shape and has had his best showing since the NBA camp.

Monday, March 29 (10pm)

Pretty good show tonight. Cory Joseph won the three-point shootout. My pick, Ray McCallum threw down the two best dunks of the night, but lost out to Josh Selby (who was the favorite). Keith Appling won the skills competition. Overall it was a much better show than the NBA guys put on.

Monday, March 29 (7:44)

Keith Appling wins skills competition. A lot of people questioned his selection to this game, which was 100% unwarranted. He's as terrific and clutch as it gets. Knight, Cory Joseph, and Barnes finalists for three point shootout. Cory has 20 and is in the lead, but I like Knight in the next round.

Monday, March 29 (6:49pm)

Reggie Bullock starts the three-point shootout with 15 points. Harrison Barnes follows with a pedestrian 13.

Hands down the best haircut of the week belongs to Providence School's Patric Young, who shaved the #12 into the side of his head (along with some funky patterns). When I see Patric at Jam Fest later tonight, I'll take just a shot of the new buzz. Untill then, this is the best pic I've got. The question everyone in the gym was asking was whether or not it top Brandon Jennings high top from 2 years ago? My take – Not quite, but a valiant effort none the less.

Monday, March 29 (10:20am)

Guys are now live scrimmaging 5 on 5. I'm watching the East right now. Kyrie Irving has been the most impressive guard thus far. He's gotten the best out of Kendall Marshall. Selby has also been impressive. He's an outstanding slasher and finisher. Even in this setting where there are so many great defenders who understand rotations and help, he's had no problem getting to the rim. He's created some highlights too. Matt (Ball is Life) is pumped about it. BIg Men Perry Jones and C.J.Leslie are dominant in transition. These guys are like freight trains on the break. Get out the way or you're going to get posterized.

Monday, March 29 (9:51am)

Just met Larry Legend. He's courtside at practice #2 and I couldn't help going over to talk to him and pick his brain. Very nice guy with an absurd amount of basketball knowledge.

Perry Jones has stood out in the first 20 minutes of practice. He's a freak athlete. He just completed a windmail during drill work, than followed it up with a 360. He's now getting his wrist taped from his altercations with the rim. Nothing serious at all though. He's already back on the court and just finished in transition.

Sunday, March 28 (5:56pm)

First practice is in the books and it was fun to be a part of. Tristan Thompson was by far the most impressive player in the building. He looks to be in outstanding shape and seemed to want it more than anyone else. He attacked the offensive glass, finished at the rim like a man possessed, and showed off an improved handle bringing the ball up the court. Tobias Harris also stood out during the East scrimmage. He did a little bit of everything. The guy handles it and shoots it like a guard, hits the glass like Dennis Rodman, makes mid range jump shots with great consistency, and even showed off an ability to knock down the three. In three years he may end up as hands down the best player in this class. He certainly works as hard if not harder than anyone else. Another guy known as a tireless worker is Harrison Barnes. He displayed unique focus on Day 1 . While everyone else was clowning around at the start of practice, Harrison went two courts over to get himself prepared to compete. Brandon Knight was the most prolific passer in the gym today. His 3/4 court skip pass to Doron Lamb in transition might have been the highlight of practice one.

Had the opportunity to chat a little with Ray McCallum. He was jacked about winning a State Championship with Detroit Country Day last night. He deserves it. He told me in July at the Reebok Summer Championship that his main goal of the season was to win a State Championship and make the McDonalds team. Check both off as milestones accomplished.

Fab Melo looks to be in terrific shape. His body looks toned, he got up and down the court much better than in previous times I've seen him, and as always displayed the skill set of a guy meant to be 6-4 not 7 feet.

Got a chance to see some of my favorite people in the industry today. Evan Daniels of scout.com was on hand (of course), as was Nils Wagner (Hoopmixtape.com), Erin Simon (Box of Mess), and the entire Ball is Life team represented as well.

Sunday, March 28 (1:42)

Ronald McDonald House visit was outstanding. We got a tour of the spectacular 80, 000 sq. foot facility, an inspirational speech from Paul Thompson (Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House charities), an opportunity to meet some of the kids who currently reside there, and the pleasure of hanging with Ronald McDonald himself.

Kyrie Irving stood out as someone who's terrific at lifting the spirit of the kids. He read to them, joked with them, and really made the most of his opportunity to give back. I had the chance to tour the facility with Jared Sullinger (a local of Columbus, Ohio). He was clearly moved by everything Ronald McDonald house does for people in need. He also was able to offer an interesting perspective on the community.

Other notable events included watching Jereme Richmond bake for the kids, a game of horse between Josh Smith, Fab Melo, Josh Selby, Patric Young, and a few more. There was no clear winner as the game didn't make it to the conclusion, but some good highlights and good laughs were had.

Off to the first practice….I'll post something at the conclusion.

Sunday, March 28 (2:53am)

In all honesty, Ryan is outstanding at his job and we're extremely lucky to have him with us this week. We've overachieved, so make sure to tune in.
