NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.– The Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Finals kicked off yesterday as the Peach Jam got underway. Featuring 24 of the top U17 teams and 16 of the top U16 teams in the country, college coaches from coast to coast gathered in South Carolina to watch some of the elite talent this coountry has to offer. A number of players seized the opportunity and showcased their skills .

Here's a look at who stood out !!!!

Kyle Anderson, 2012, SF, 6’8, 223lbs, St. Anthony’s (NJ), New Jersey Playaz-

Despite being one of the youngest players on the floor, Anderson was the catalyst to his team’s dominant 80-49 victory over Cali Supreme. The versatile rising junior had a double-double with a game-high 17 points (6/7 FG, 1/1 3P, 4/6 FT) and 11 rebounds to go along with 6 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, and just 2 turnovers. Anderson still needs to improve his quickness, but he is long, gets past his defenders to get to the cup, finds the open man, and scores around the rim. Having played point guard for much of his life, Anderson is more of a point combo forward, which makes him an intriguing long term prospect.

Wayne Blackshear, 2011, SG, 6’5, 210lbs, Morgan Park (IL), Mac Irvin Fire-

Even when Blackshear is not at his absolute best, the Louisville-commit is still outstanding. In his team’s 69-61 win over Athletes First, Blackshear had 18 points (7/11 FG, 4/5 3P, 0/2 FT) to lead all scorers. A shooting guard who can score from anywhere on the floor, Blackshear did not turn the ball over at all. He is one of the better three-point shooters in the crop of rising seniors, but play him too close and he will get to the basket off the bounce. A leader at both ends, Blackshear is a vocal player who gets the job done.

Jabari Brown, 2011, SG, 6’4, 190lbs, Oakland (CA), Drew Gooden Soldiers-

The boys from Northern California dominated Wisconsin Playground Elite to the tune of 84-67 and Brown was the main reason why. An elite 2011 prospect, Brown had over twice as many points as any other player on the court with 32 (12/21 FG, 1/3 3P, 7/8 FT) as well as 8 rebounds. Johnson is a special player due to the fact that he is an elite sharpshooter who also possesses phenomenal athletic ability. A strong, sturdy two with a quality handle, Brown was one of the top three performers I saw.

Michael Carter-Williams, 2011, SG, 6’5, 170lbs, St. Andrew’s (RI), BABC-

The Syracuse-bound Carter-Williams was the best player of the day it is not even a question. A slender combo guard, Carter-Williams poured in 44 (10/20 FG, 4/10 3P, 20/24 FT) of his team’s 68 points, good for 64.7% of the total. BABC beat the Georgia Stars 68-60 in overtime, and only was able to get there because MCW knocked down a halfcourt buzzer beater at the end of regulation. Carter-Williams was outstanding at the line and got there time and time again. He did have 7 turnovers and just 1 assist, but grabbed 9 rebounds. This was by far the best I have seen Carter-Williams play, as he showcased a complete offensive game as well as leadership abilities.

Levi Randolph, 2011, SG, 6’5, 180lbs, Bob Jones (AL), Alabama Challenge-

Like Blackshear, Randolph was not at his best, but he got the job done. In a big upset victory over the Howard Pulley Panthers, 65-63, Randolph hit the game-winning shot with less than five seconds to go and then stole the inbounds pass to seal the deal. The Alabama-bound combo guard had a double-double with 16 points (7/17 FG, 0/3 3P, 2/4 FT) and 12 rebounds as well as 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 turnovers. Randolph got better and better as the game progressed as he began to find his stroke. Randolph has a nice handle, superb athleticism, great rebounding ability for a guard, a solid midrange game, and a good basketball IQ.

Amadou Sidibe, 2012, PF, 6’8, 200lbs, Cardinal Hayes (NY), New York Gauchos 16s-

In the two U16 games I watched, the ex-Fordham commit was easily the top performer. The Gauchos lost to Boo Williams Summer League, but Sidibe was not the reason why. An absolute beast on the boards, Sidibe grabbed rebounds left and right, both on offense and defense. The big man also blocked shots and scored around the basket. He runs the floor, has some major potential at the next level, and was a top three performer on the day.

Marvin Singleton, 2011, PF, 6’5, 215lbs, Hopkins (MN), Howard Pulley Panthers- A recent Northern Iowa commit, this undersized power forward did all he could to give Pulley the win, but it was not enough. Singleton had over a third of his team’s 63 points with 22 (8/12 FG, 0/1 3P, 6/6 FT) along with 11 rebounds for a double-double. He did have 2 turnovers, but was outstanding nonetheless. A strong, powerful player who outworks and outmuscles defenders, Singleton is hard to contain around the post. He has great hands, plays hard, and can put the ball on the deck a bit.

Sam Thompson, 2011, SF, 6’6, 210lbs, Whitney Young (IL), Mac Irvin Fire-

Blackshear was the best player for the Windy City squad, but Thompson was not far behind. A big-time athlete, Thompson showed that he is more than a high riser, knocking down a number of jumpers, especially late in the game when his team pulled away. Thompson had 15 points (6/11 FG, 1/4 3P, 2/4 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal, and 2 turnovers. Thompson has a high ceiling and has a chance to develop into a big-time player.

Recruiting Nuggets

Stevie Clark, 2013, PG, 5’8, 160lbs, Douglass (OK), Athletes First- Entering his sophomore year, Clark already has an offer from Marquette. He mentioned Arizona, Lamar, Wichita State, and Kansas as other schools that are showing interest.

Charles Eaton, 2011, SG, 6’2, 170lbs, Selma (AL), Alabama Challenge- Eaton has no offers as of now, but is receiving recruiting interest from Alabama, Arkansas, Murray State, Georgia, and East Carolina. He lists Alabama and Arkansas as his favorites at this point.

Thomas Hamilton, Jr., 2013, PF, 6’9, 220lbs, Whitney Young (IL), Mac Irvin Fire 16s¬- Merely a rising sophomore, Hamilton already has an offer from Illinois. No one else is involved in his recruitment yet, as this is his first event back since straining his patella in January.

AJ Hammons, 2012, C, 6’11, 260lbs, Oak Hill Academy (VA), Spiece Indy Heat- Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, and Xavier have already offered the Indiana native. Marquette, Ohio State, North Carolina, and Kentucky have shown interest.

Martavious Newby, 2012, SG, 6’3, 200lbs, Booker T. Washington (TN), Memphis YOMCA 16s- The rising junior claims offers from Memphis, Tennessee, Auburn, and East Tennessee as well as interest from Kentucky, UTEP, Missouri, and Southern Mississippi. Newby has Memphis and Tennessee atop his list and would like to hear from UConn, Louisville, Texas, and Georgetown.

Amadou Sidibe- One of the top 2012 players in the Big Apple, Sidibe holds the equivalent of an offer from Yale, and is also receiving interest from Rutgers and Boston College. He is no longer considering Fordham, to which he was once committed.

Tavares Sledge, 2011, PF, 6’8, 210lbs, Brookwood (AL), Alabama Challenge- Sledge does not yet have any offers, but is fielding interest from South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri State, Murray State, and Miami. He has South Carolina as his favorite right now.

The annual Bill Hensley Memorial Classic kicked off this past weekend at the Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne, IN. The competition was fierce, the talent was abundant, and the event was run extremely well, as always.

Home state Indiana Elite took the crown in the 17-U bracket, while gritty Martin Bros. Select won the 16-U Champsionship. For the youngsters, All-Ohio Red was tops in the 15-U division.

Here’s a look at some of the top performers we saw:

Anthony Davis, 6’10, PF, Mean Streets 17U, 2011- There was no player who has risen more in the spring AAU circuit than Davis. Going from virtually unknown on the national level, it appears that he will be ranked amongst the top 25 by virtually every major recruiting service when the next set of rankings come out, and for good reason. Having grown 5 inches in the past year, he still has the mobility of a wing player with the size of an elite big. Despite his John Henson-esque body, he is tough enough to mix it up in the paint and have a major presence on the defensive end. The Chicago native is a bit of a jack of all trades offensively, handling the ball in the open floor, making great passes out of a double team, and hitting turnaround jumpers out of the post. It’s clear that he’s most comfortable as a pick and pop player due to his perimeter skills at this point, though. Word is that Davis has received over 20 offers based on second hand information from his play this weekend. Check out the highlights, created by Ty Kish of City League Hoops.

Wayne Blackshear, 6’5, SG, Mac Irvin Fire 17U, 2011

Before going down with an ankle injury, Blackshear was having an outstanding tournament. Known as a guy who doesn’t always bring it, he was definitely on point at Spiece. Not sure if there was a better one on one player there, given his advanced skill set and variety of score in every imaginable way for a shooting guard. Hopefully the ankle injury wasn’t too serious, because the Louisville commit looked like he was going to be shooting up the recruiting rankings before he went down.

J.P. Tokoto, 6’6, SG/SF, Wisconsin Playground Warriors 16U, 2012

As far as 16’s were concerned, Tokoto was easily the best. Having not seen him since the AAU season last year, I was impressed with how much he’d grown and how much more explosive he’d become. J.P. simply did whatever he wanted on the court, whether it be slashing to the rim, knocking down open jumpers, making great passes, or playing killer defense. If he continues his play like this throughout the rest of the spring/summer, he’ll be making a legit case for best wing in 2012.

BJ Young, 6’4, SG, St. Louis Gameface 17U, 2011

Aside from Davis, young made more of a splash than anyone at Spiece. The wiry slasher dropped 42 points on Tony Wroten and Co., en route to leading his team to the championship game of the 17U bracket. Young proved to be a pure scorer, getting at you from mid-range, finishing with acrobatic takes to the rim, and hitting the 3 when left open. Definitely a high major guy that slipped under the radar a bit, but academic issues may deter him to the prep school route for next year.
Wayne Blackshear, 6’5, SG, Mac Irvin Fire 17U, 2011- Before going down with an ankle injury, Blackshear was having an outstanding tournament.

Tony Wroten, 6’5, PG, Seattle Rotary 17U, 2011

Coming off of a terrible knee injury that forced him to miss his entire junior year, it was our first chance to get a glimpse at Wroten since last season. The explosiveness definitely isn’t quite there yet, but the skill set definitely is. Wroten did an outstanding job running the pick and roll and his ridiculous court vision was on center stage. He was consistent shooting the ball and getting to the basket, but lacked the explosiveness to finish above shot-blockers that he once had before. Tony was also incredibly left hand dominant, but still appears to be a top-10 guy in this class at this point.

Shaheed Davis, 6’8, PF, Ohio Basketball Club 16U, 2012

Davis is a guy who has really made a splash on the AAU circuit, going from a virtual unknown outside of Ohio to getting the best of a number of top 50 big men. Davis was dominant against the duo of Obij Ajet and Hanner Perea, changing the game defensively with his athleticism and getting buckets inside with his quick leaping ability. Shaheed showed off his perimeter game a number of times too, handling the ball in the open floor and knocking down a couple jumpers. Still very rough around the edges, Davis is definitely a guy who could develop into a HM kid down the road.

Devauntes Smith-Rivera, 6’2, SG, Indiana Elite 16U, 2012

There wasn’t a better pure scorer on the 16U level than Smith-Rivera. The stocky combo guard got to the cup going both left and right, drilled a number of deep jumpers, and made some crafty euro-steps around defenders maneuvering to the basket. Many feel that Smith-Rivera may have peaked early, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a guy who is going to immediately put points on the board at the next level.

Cody Zeller, 6’10, PF/C, Indiana Elite, 17U, 2011

Zeller has really come a long ways over the last year, emerging as a solid go to guy in the post offensively. While he’s still not the strongest guy on the planet, he has put on weight and is able to hold his own on the low blocks. Zeller is not quite the pick and pop threat that his older brothers were at the same stage, but is making strides to hit that status.

Adam Woodbury, 7’0, C, Martin Bros. Select, 16U, 2012

Woodbury was a surprise for me, having never seen this 7-footer before and seeing how productive he was. Although he’s quite mechanical, he got the best of the more heralded 6’11 Willie Cauley in their head to head matchup. Adam is a good rebounder, fights for position, and can consistently drill a left handed hook shot. Woodbury does not run the floor very well at this point, but would be a nice fit at a MM+ to HM program with a slower tempo offense.
