Trevor has once again been sensational so far this week. After playing great at Pitt Jam Fest, I talked about how Trevor is so much more than the shooter he's labelled. Tonight, it was his shooting which once again dazzled me. He's absolutely wet. Trevor gets his shoulders square to the target, makes the catch, and knocks it down. He's got a great follow through and doesn't force bad shots. He's also unbelievably unselfish. The kid went 4 possessions in a row where no one was within 10 feet of him and no one got him the ball. On the 5th possession he was once again wide open and what did he do? He fed the post to exploit a mismatch for his big man. That's the kind of IQ and teammate you get when you have Trevor Cooney.
With Michael Gilchrist home getting ready for his ACT's on Monday and Rakeem Christmas banged up and unable to play, Trevor Cooney did work for Team Final. Known as a shooter, Trevor continues to prove he's much more complete than that. For starters, he's a very underrated athlete. He's got legs and can really elevate. He's also an underrated point guard. I'm not sure if he'll ever be a full time lead man, but he can definately distribute the basketball. He's such a dangerous shooter that teams close out on him tight. He used that to his advantage today drawing the defenders than penetrating the lane and kicking, getting one of his teammates a very open look. If you look at the way Syracuse used Andy Rautins this year, you can't help but being excited to see Trevor in a similar role for the Orange.
Trevor did what Trevor always does. He showed off the smoothest shooting stroke in the country. Before the drill work started, Trevor had the opportunity to work with coach McNamara one on one. They worked on shooting (of course) as well as protecting the ball when Trevor drives to the basket. It must have been a terrific experience for the Delaware shooting guard as he and Gerry have a similar skill set. What I really like about Trevor is how personal he takes winning. He’s an extremely competitive kid who gets upset with himself when he loses a two on two drill. I was also really impressed with how hard and effective Trevor played on defense throughout the drills. He did an excellent job locking people up and forcing them into difficult low percentage shots. Come game time Trevor once again showed off his range, connecting on multiple three point baskets. He mad shots off the curl (both ways), as well as when his feet were set. He also displayed an improved handle and has clearly been working on his point guard skills. He’s an OUTSTANDING shooter who seems to be working extremely hard to add more and more elements to his game. I’ve now seen him countless times this summer and have come away every time singing his praises.
Entering just his Junior year in high school, Cooney could be the best shooter in the class of 2011. Heck, he might have been the best shooter in the entire gym. He was making everything today during the scrimmages and could be a one man zone buster at the next level. He isn’t going to wow you in a workout as he doesn’t posses the kind of athletic ability found all over the gym, however when the lights come on and the ball goes live, this kid can flat out play. He’s such a great shooter that he was able to stretch the floor for the rest of his teammates. This opened the lane for the guards, and his team was able score a lot of easy buckets underneath.
