Negus Webster-Chan Pledges to Louisville

Posted on 22. Dec, 2010 by Nolan Shulman in Canada Spotlight, High School, Interviews

One week after visiting the Louisville campus for the 2nd time in recent memory and having his mom with him to meet the staff and Coach Pitino, Negus Webster-Chan has verbally committed to the Cards.

According to Huntington Prep Head Coach Rob Fulford, "Negus is a versatile, athletic player who can play and guard multiple positions.  He's a great fit for Louisville as they play a very similar style to us defensively.  They utilize a lot of presses and zone traps and his length and athleticism is a great fit for that."

Negus has long been a household name at Flagrant Fouls due to his fluid movement, his court vision, and his ability to effect the game in a variety of fashions.   He is currently our #1 guard in the Canadian class of 2012.  He plays AAU in the summer for Mike George and Tony McIntyre on a loaded Nike Team Takeover Canada team.  While he's been highly regarded in Canada for quite some time, he's blown up in the last 9 months while playing in the United States.  He was recently listed as scout.com's 45th ranked player in the country and has seen his list of suitors pick up steam since enrolling at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

So why did Negus feel Louisville was the right destination for him?  "Rick Pitino is one of the most brilliant minds in college coaching and I feel that I can reach my fullest potential under his guidance.  He's the only coach in college history to take 3 different teams to the final 4" said Negus.  Another important factor was the presence of ex Huntington Prep center Gorgui Dieng.  As Negus puts it, "I look up to Gorgui because he's making his dreams come true.  He's like a mentor to me and has provided me with sound advice based on his experiences."

After securing a really strong class in 2011, Rick Pitino and the Louisville staff have turned their attention to the class of 2012.  They've come out of the gate swinging, as Negus joins his friend and North Carolina native Rodney Purvis.  Rodney's verbal commitment to Louisville a few days ago was also something Negus is excited about.   "I've seen Rodney's game and I think we can compliment each other and bring chemistry to the team."

His final message to those in Canada who've followed his development over the last few years. "L's Up !!!!"

Here are some highlights of Negus from this past summer, courtesy of our friends at City League Hoops TV.
