Golden Hawks add “Will Power”

Posted on 28. Feb, 2011 by Barry Hayes in Canada Spotlight, High School, Interviews

Fresh off their upset win at Windsor on Saturday night to advance to the OUA Final Four, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks also have something new to look forward to next year. Make that ‘someone’ new, as 6’1” point guard Will Coulthard (Oakville, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) has committed to joining the Golden Hawks next fall.

Like former high school teammate (and Western Mustang-to-be) Charlie Drouin, Will played a key role in St. Thomas Aquinas’ OFSAA ‘AA’ Gold medal in 2009, then earning a Bronze medal in 2010. One more win today against St. Paul’s (Mississauga), and he will get ready to compete in his third straight OFSAA ‘AA’ tournament. North Bay is the host city from March 7-9.

I chose Laurier because I really enjoyed the feel of the campus and the smaller school atmosphere,” said Coulthard.

I have also known (Laurier head coach) Peter Campbell for a while now and he is someone that I would like to play for. I really enjoy their style of play.

From our end, we feel he will help us immediately at the point guard position,” said Peter Campbell.

Will’s father, David, had an incredible career with York University as a five-time CIS All-Canadian (1978-82) and twice named the CIS’ Most Outstanding Player (1979, 1981).

Known for his energy and heady court vision, there is considerable potential for Will to grow into an impact CIS player as well.

He has a great upside with an excellent stroke and great court vision,” added Campbell. “He will need to adjust to the quicker stronger style of play in the CIS after playing Tier 2 ball in (St. Thomas Aquinas’ regional league).
