New Recruits Have the “X-factor”

Posted on 20. Feb, 2011 by Barry Hayes in Canada Spotlight, High School

A perennial contender to make the CIS championship tournament, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men are making the necessary steps to reload for next year with commitments from Jacob Simmons and Tyrell Vernon.

Jacob, a 6’7” 200-pound forward at Charlottetown Rural High School, was rewarded with an invite to the Cadet National Team tryouts in Toronto last summer. He then represented Team Prince Edward Island at the U17 National Championships in Winnipeg, averaging 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

I grew up watching the X-men play at the CIS championships and I have been going to summer ball camps at St.FX for a while too,” said Simmons. “Coach K is a great coach and has established a winning tradition and I look forward to wearing the white and blue.”

“Coach K” refers to X-Men head coach Steve Konchalski, the all-time winningest coach in CIS history. He will have a vastly different rotation next year, with 5 fifth-year seniors (Christian Upshaw, Will Silver, Charlie Spurr, Alberto Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson) currently accumulating 51% (1761/3450 minutes) of the entire team’s playing time this season. The new duo is expected to be important new pieces in the future success of the X-Men.

Jacob has attended our summer basketball camp at St. FX and has impressed me with his combination of size (6’7”) and versatility,” said Konchalski. “He eventually will be able to play the 3/4 position that is so important in the CIS game. He finishes well in the paint and has a soft stroke from the perimeter.”

Tyrell is a transfer from McMaster University and will have two years of eligibility remaining. He is best known for his quickness, durability, and shooting with range. In his three years with the Marauders, the former OUA West All-Rookie Team selection accumulated 100 three-pointers made.

Tyrell will bring experience, leadership and scoring power to the X-Men backcourt that will be losing veterans Christian Upshaw, Will Silver and Charlie Spurr,” said Konchalski. “He is a combo guard who will be given the opportunity to run the offense from the point guard position.”
