Gee-Gees Claw Hawks Point Guard

Posted on 31. Mar, 2011 by Nolan Shulman in Canada Spotlight, High School, Interviews

There is nothing more important as a new head coach then hitting the recruiting trail and securing a first class that will fit the mold of your vision and shape the way your program competes.  As an extension of the coach, the point guard is often the most influencial piece to the puzzle.  Today, Gee-Gees HC James Derouin found his point guard of the future in Loyola floor general Mike Lafricain.  According to Derouin, “The coaching staff here identified the two areas that we wanted to improve through recruiting as basketball IQ and outside shooting. Mike brings both of those to the table and does an incredible job of finding his teammates.”

For Mike, the culture of basketball and his relationship with the staff were crucial in the decision making process.  "I think it was a great decision on my part because Ottawa is a great place for basketball." said Mike.  "They have a great history with Carleton in the area and they have a great rivalry between the two schools.  I felt like I had a great connection with all the coaches over there and a couple of the players as well."

When asked what Ottawa fans should expect from their newest acquisition, Mike responded by saying,  "While playing time is never a guarentee, I think there's a good chance I'm going to get a lot of playing time and make an immediate impact in the first few years."  The way coach Derouin gushes about him as a prospect, I think there's a good chance of that coming to fruition.  "We feel that of the point guards who are staying in Canada,  Mike was the best “pure” point guard available. While he did have a lot of interest from the US, we love that he decided to stay home and play here in Canada. Putting Mike in between Warren Ward and Johnny Berhanemeskel has everyone here at Ottawa U extremely excited about next season."

We've been high on Lafricain for quite some time and feel it's his intangibles which separates him from the herd.  He's a leader of men and a guy who sets the foundation of your program by doing things the right way and ensuring his teammates follow his lead.  "Mike is a great kid, an excellent student, and has a passion for basketball that is unlike any young player I've been around," proclaimed coach Derouin. "Mike is the type of PG that everyone loves playing with; unselfish and always finds the open guy. We feel that Mike will not only help us on the floor, but also in bringing in more quality recruits in the future. He’s just a guy players love to run with."

Mike joins Vikas Gill and Serge Grenon in Ottawa's incoming recruiting class.  It's a heck of foundation to what looks to be an emerging power in the world of CIS recruiting.   Congrats to Mike, his family, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees community.
