The Soldiers had a disappointing ending to an otherwise impressive run in the EYBL, falling 82-76 to the St. Louis Eagles in quarterfinals, but Wiltjer did all he could to prevent the loss from happening. The face-up four had 23 points (9/13 FG, 0/1 3P, 5/7 FT) and 11 rebounds, tops on his team in both categories. Wiltjer did it all offensively, from posting up to knocking down some jumpers.
If you like old school basketball, you have to come away impressed with Kyle Wiltjer. He's not explosive, not really all that fast, and can't jump out of the gym. So what can he do? He can make three's, pass out of the high post, play on the low block, and defend. The best thing I saw all day was a sky hook coming across the lane. He may have the highest basketball IQ of anyone in the gym.
Kyle is another guy who wasn't built for the bright lights of an all-star game. He's a versatile guy who chips in the little things that help a team succeed. While he didn't provide the crowd roar, he did do a lot of positives in the game. He is a terrific passer from the face-up position, has range on his jumper out to the three point line, and guards multiple positions. He made shots, distributed the basketball, and played passionate defense for an all-star game. Like I said, the little things.
Kyle displayed a very high skill level this week at the HAX. He showed soft hands and touch, great footwork, tremendous passing, and clutch free throw shooting. The one thing Kyle has to do is become more aggressive. He has stretches where he dissapears at times and then stretches where he's outstanding. If he stayed aggressive the entire game, he'd be one of the best face-up four's in the country
