Ottawa Referees’ Tip-Off - Day 1

Posted on 19. Nov, 2010 by Barry Hayes in Canada Spotlight, High School, Tournaments

With so much size and talent leaving Canadian high school basketball for the prep school experience, the Ottawa area stands out as a city maintaining its strong tradition of local talent. A couple of top prospects began the new high school season in the Nation’s Capital with strong performances.

Results @ St. Paul's H.S.

Sir Robert Borden 65, St. Paul’s 64
Woodroffe 69 (Ali Sales 24), Vankleek Hill 47
Earl of March 81 (Ryan Evans 19), Franco-Ouest 35
St. Peter 72 (Daniel Nwosu 27), Colonel By 49

Standout Prospects

Ryan Evans, Earl of March (6’10” C, 2011)

Ryan showed a repertoire of inside and outside capabilities on the offensive end. With a 6’5” opponent guarding him, he began with his face-up capabilities, knocking down a couple of deep jump shots. He also showed a smooth baseline step-back jumper in the second half. With a huge wingspan, he altered and blocked a number of shots if anyone was bold enough to drive in his area, but he needs to fight harder underneath for rebounds. As Franco-Ouest collectively began to collapse when Ryan got the ball, he had no problem fighting through it and finding his teammates for wide open outside shots.

Daniel Nwosu, St. Peter (6’2” CG, 2013)

As the top prospect in Eastern Ontario for his age, Daniel simply dominated right out of the gates. Colonel By defenders didn’t give him much room with the ball on the perimeter, but enough for him to swish 3 three-pointers in the first quarter. As a front part of the team’s fullcourt pressure, he also demonstrated good instincts, quick hands, and great speed with the ball in transition. The first quarter ended with a layup, giving him 17 points. With a comfortable lead, Daniel switched his role more towards that of a distributor. He did a good job of getting everyone involved as the young team was familiarizing themselves with the new playbook. He finished with a game-high 27 points.

Recruiting News

Ryan will not be continuing on in the tournament with his school team, as he visits St. Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) this weekend. The X-Men have a strong basketball tradition and have routinely scoured the Ottawa area with success.
