St.Michael’s College Tip Off Showcase: Day 2 Recap

Posted on 07. Nov, 2010 by Nolan Shulman in Canada Spotlight, High School, Tournaments

It was another fun day at the St.Michael's College Tip Off Showcase.  While it didn't have the drama of day one, I thought the quality of basketball picked up a notch.  Here's a look at the day 2 results, leading scorer's, and standout prospects.

Results

3- St. Michael's College 74 (Duane Notice 20), St. Francis (St. Catharines) 52 (Keegan Dunlop 17)
4- Oakwood 64 (Kevin Blake 20), Loyola (Oakville) 55 (Adam Presutti 18)

DAY ONE RECAP

Standout Prospects

Malcolm Duvivier, St.Mike's (6-0, PG, 2014)

Malcolm had an extremely efficient 17 points yesterday.  He started the game like a house on fire, and was the catalyst in St.Mike's 23-4 first quarter.  I already knew Malcolm could knock down set jumpers, but what impressed me was his concerted effort to break his defender down off the bounce.  I said in the summer that it was the one area of his game that was lacking, and while its still not his strength, he made two moves along the baseline that were extremely explosive.  If he can continue to develop that area of his game, he'll be a much more complete and dynamic point guard.  One thing I notice with Malcolm is that he sometimes has the tendency to get down on himself after he makes a mistake.  He works so hard and is so driven to be perfect that when things don't go his way, you can see it in his body language.  He needs to learn to play the game one play at a time.  When he makes a terrific play, on to the next one.  When he makes a mistake, on to the next one.  That said I thought Malcolm proved in the last two days that he continues to improve each time I come out to see him.  (see picture above)

Duane Notice, St.Mike's (6-3, SG, 2013)

While he didn't clear the bleachers in yesterday's game, Duane was much better overall.  He let the game come to him more and spent the first quarter facilitating and getting his teammates easy looks.  He made a high percentage of his jump shots and has really turned himself into a pretty darn good set shooter.   The one area where he made a giant leap in day two was just bringing the ball up the floor.  He wasn't trying to dribble through traffic and was making the easy pass instead of trying to thread the pressure.  It was just a terrific game for Duane who made positive play after positive play and led St.Mike's to a relatively smooth victory.

Keegan Dunlop, St.Francis (6-8, C, 2011)

Keegan was as good as I've seen him yesterday vs. St.Mike's.  He plays the game with tremendous understanding of offensive spacing.  He sets good screens, directs traffic from the high post, and really has a good understanding of ball movement and his teams offensive scheme.  Once St.Mike's big man Ryall Stroud got hurt, St.Mike's struggled to rebound their area and Keegan did work.  He finished with 17 and was solid throughout.

Due to the Championship at the Early Bird @ FHC, I was only able to take in the first half of the second game !!!

Kevin Blake, Oakwood (6-1, SG, 2011)

Another day, another strong performance for Kevin Blake.  He walks such a fine line between letting the game come to him and getting aggressive and taking over that it's fun to watch.  Defensively he never allows middle penetration, and combines his gift of strength, length, and IQ to make it tough on his opponent.  The more I take in Kevin Blake the bigger fan I become.  He's the best perimeter defender in his class.

Adam Presutti, Loyola (6-2, SG, 2011)

While I was only able to stay for the first half, Adam had already left a stamp on the game.  He made shots from all over the court in the first half and helped keep Loyola in it.  The other thing I like about Adam's game is his energy, communication, and the way he moves off the ball.  He's not the most athletically gifted kid on the court, but he was one of the most effective.
