Ravens capture D1 transfer Chmielewski

Posted on 24. May, 2011 by Barry Hayes in Canada Spotlight

As winners of 7 of the last 9 CIS national championships, the Carleton Ravens have relied largely on eastern Ontario talent to keep their winning tradition alive. However, the dynamics appear to be changing in a big way. Head coach Dave Smart has secured his third recruit from the Montreal area, with the announcement that NCAA Division 1 point guard Adam Chmielewski has left St. Francis University (Brooklyn, NY) after one season to join the Ottawa-based school this fall. He is required to sit out the 2011-12 season due to CIS transfer regulations.

Adam will be an immediate impact player in our league,” said Smart. “He is an extremely important pickup, as he fills a void at a ball-handling guard position left by graduating seniors Willy (Manigat), Cole (Hobin) and Elliot (Thompson) next year.”

A former Champlain-St. Lambert all-star point guard, Chmielewski joins fellow Montreal-natives Chris Joseph (6’1” PG, Dawson) and 2010-11 Cegep AAA Player of the Year, Guillaume Payen-Boucard (6’5” SF, Ahuntsic), in Carleton’s recruiting class.

The success in Montreal is a combination of things,” added Smart. “We have been trying extremely hard in the Cegep system for the past three years and this year, with the help of (QC-United president) Loic Rwigema, we have been able to identify strong character kids as well. He has been a huge help in terms of evaluating their character and work ethic.

Chmielewski finished this past season averaging 2.2 points and 1.1 assists in 12.7 minutes per game for the Terriers. The team finished in fifth place in the Northeast Conference (10-8 in Conference, 15-15 Overall).

Adam, (returning combo guard) Phil (Scrubb) and Chris (Joseph) will be three extremely talented ball-handlers in our backcourt,” said Smart. “All three can also defend the ball.”

Northeastern transfer Ben Felix (6’11” C) is another confirmed commitment, as is local star Justin Shaver (6’6” PF), among the nation’s finest high school post players this year. As a native of Mill Bay on Vancouver Island, Felix becomes the third team member from British Columbia, as the Scrubb brothers, Phil & Thomas, hail from Vancouver.
