For months I have laughed at the inclination that someone other than Myck Kabongo is Canada's top point guard. I'm not going to name names, but those who have made these claims know who they are. Many of Canada's most influential basketball minds don't travel to the United States to see their prospects play the best of the best. Those of us that do know that Myck is head and shoulders above the rest and among the elite prospects in North America. The All-Canada Classic gave Candians a glimpse of the type of player Kabongo has become. His rediculous 3rd quarter outburst put an end to the debate. He routinely blew by his defender and made acrobatic plays at the rim, noone on the floor had the lateral speed to stay in front of him, and Myck navigated his way anywhere he wanted on the court. He demonstrated an improved outside jumper; the one knock on his game, and left little doubt who deserved the MVP trophy.
The MVP of the Pangos All-American camp put on a show this week in Long Beach. He's a one man fast break that pushed the tempo every chance he got. Not only does his superior quickness translate to fastbreak buckets offensively, but it also prevents opposing point guards from running out or getting in the paint. His lateral speed defensively is unmatched in the class of 2011. Its not just his foot speed that disrupted people defensively; his desire to compete and lock people up also played a role. He takes the game so personal that he gives all out effort on both ends every possession. Kids around the country should take notice and learn something !!!! Offensively Myck was the clear cut leader on a team filled with star-power. He commands their respect and attention and does an outstanding job directing traffic. He distributed the basketball to his teammates in a position to succeed, got to the rim anytime he felt like it, and scored the ball efficiently and effectively. I knew Myck was a tremendous basketball player, but this week he took his game to a new level.
Myck finally put to rest the notion that he isn’t a true lead guard. Although he remains an excellent scorer and his ability to push the tempo is still what sets him apart, Myck showed he can also distribute the rock. Handing out a tournament high 12 dimes in his game vs. Bishop O'Connell, Myck played the role of facilitator as well as anyone in the tournament. He went head to head with Kendall Marshall and won the battle and the war.
Kabongo used his superior end to end quickness to score easy points in transition all week long. There may not be a faster guard in the country with the ball in their hands than Myck. He scored 80 points in 4 games and was equally efficient running the Grey Bee’s half court sets as he was on the run. What impressed me most about Myck was his improved outside J. He came into his junior year with a wrap that he couldn’t knock it down from deep, however, after making 13 of 25 bombs this week, he should quiet his critics.
Myck was absolutely sensational today in Grassroots Canda's first game. He dictated tempo, initiated the half court sets, made his jumpers, and played excellent on ball defense. The thing that impressed me most about Myck was his intesity. He never cracks a smile and is always focused on the task at hand. He was as vocal with his teammates as anyone I've seen in the July recruiting period. He not only directed traffic, but he than explained to his teammates why he wanted them to go somewhere during a stop in play. Kabongo is absolutely lightning quick and imposssible to stay in front of. He seems to always be moving at full speed and never shows any signs of letting up. He also shot the ball unbelievable in this contest, connecting on multiple three's and even a couple mid range jump shots. Simply put Kabongo had the best game of anyone I've seen all month.
